Course Descriptions for Canoe, Kayak and Paddle Co. LLC. for the coming year 2005
Level One:
Quick start to Canoeing – This course is what it says , a quick 2-3 hour session providing a safe introduction to the basics. It will give a taste of the fun and challenge one can enjoy in Canoe sport. Top end equipment, solo or tandem recreational Canoe [touring Canoe], pfd (life vest), paddle and other gear is provided. Generally this course is geared to tandem canoers who learn both bow and stern control.
ACA certified Instructor. No experience necessary. We suggest this course as a minimum before taking any of our trips or more Focused canoe Courses. 9am – Noon or 1pm – 4pm Cost $65.

Level Two:
Essentials of River Canoe or River canoe Touring – an extension of Quick start, where we spend more time on skill development and the river environment. You will learn how to use the currents and conditions, as well as how to avoid hazards. Eddy turns, ferries, side slips, peel outs, Basic self rescues are taught and practiced, so plan to get wet. This is a 5 hour session, held on either the Potomac or a tributary [Seneca creek, Antietam Creek]. A top end canoe, pfd. (life vest) and other gear is provided. This is a great course for anyone who has a canoe and wants to improve; is thinking about buying a canoe or is trying to decide whether to go down the Canoe or kayak path to paddling. Participating in this course will give you the skills for most of our trips. ACA Instructors. 9am – 3pm $130

Level Three:
Focus on Skill, Basic River [White Water] Canoe – now we are getting serious about the details. We will work on developing strokes and maneuvers in the boat utilizing the best techniques and muscle groups. The focus will be on boat control, edging, leans, tilts and efficiency.
Specific stroke development and refinement in the forward, back, bow draws, side slips, bracing . This 5 hour course requires that you have significant relevant experience, or have mastered the skills learned in our Essentials course. ACA certified Instructors. A properly fitted, outfitted Canoe, pfd (life vest), paddle and other gear is provided. 9am – 4pm $130

Other Clinics and Courses:
Level Four: Whitewater Canoe – this full day [or longer] course is conducted on and in whitewater Up through class II, using properly outfitted solo and tandem canoes. We will work on paddling strokes , rescues and maneuvers for playing on our rivers, bends, waves, currents, eddy’s and hydraulics.
You should be comfortable kneeling in a ww canoe and know the strokes, including braces. This is an intense fun course for those with their own equipment although we have some boats and gear available for rental. 9am – 4pm $130

WW Safety and Rescue in Canoe – we concentrate on the different techniques in self and assisted rescues. This is a 5 hour session with education and a lot of hands on practice. It is a great place to experiment and develop what works for you in your boat with your gear. If you don’t have any you can rent from us. This course follows Canoe Safety Test. 9am – 3pm $130

Trip Leaders - We have developed this course to help instructors and others who lead private, club, or commercial trips face the risk, liability and management issues. We will plan a trip using practiced river and group management techniques. There will be plenty of "scenarios" to get as close as we can to the real thing. All those acting as trip leaders or coordinators for clubs, schools or camps, should take this course at least once and probably annually as continuing education. Within the "public course" concept, CKAPCO teaches Private Classes. It may involve the same courses listed above but taught to less than a normal class . A normal class is usually 5 or 6 students per instructor. Private Instruction may involve teaching a specific student advanced skills on a one on one basis.
Generally speaking Private instruction is charged at a $50 per hour week day rate, $200 per day minimum. All private instruction is tailored to the students requirements; cost and details [read more here]are settled in advance. Call Mike.
